Gmail Playing Music? Here’s the Fix

Tuesday, August 31, 2010 Good Lord. I rolled on into the office this morning, fired up my laptop, opened gmail and instantly started hearing crazy carnival/1920′s music blasting out of my computer.

Naturally, I though it was a virus and shut down, re-booted, and gave it another go. More music. After repeating this a third time I was convinced I was in a horror movie and psycho killer carnival clowns must be closing in on me to finish me off….all before my morning caffeine.

Horrifying.

It turns out this was Google’s attempt to let everyone know about Gmail’s new “Priority Inbox” feature and was supposed to play a video to go along with it but the implementation was…shall we say…less than ideal.

To make the music stop: Go to the top of your gmail and look for the line in red that says something like: New! Priority Inbox! and follow the prompts to get there. The music will finally stop. Its a good thing it did because my co-worker Brittany was about to stab me in the face with a fork if the music didn’t stop. (She isn’t a morning person).

Check out the video for details:

At least it kept us entertained.

    Define "entertained"

I didn't get the music because I'm on an academic account. The music by itself must have been irritating, but I personally liked the video…but maybe I should have been born in the 30's.

The video with music would have been okay- but first thing when firing up the laptop was terrible- I thought i had the dreaded "Carnival Virus" or something

Awful. That’s why we mute. Thanks for coming to office hours last night!

Same thing happened to me. Google could not have picked a better music choice to say 'your computer is going to die a terrible carny death." Clearly they need to pick up a few audio engineers.

LOL @ "die a horrible carny death"
